In the Massachusetts census of 1900, Lucinda states that her name is "Louise M. in relation to the fact that her cousin Nellie Parks is living with her at that time. Nellie was a daughter of her Uncle James Parks who lived near Port Burwell at that time.
Lou, as she was known in the family, was married to Eugene Sibley at this time, and they were living at 73 [?] Main St., Springfield, Mass. There were two children: Ivah, daughter, who worked for the Library in Springfield, and never married, and Harold Sibley, who it appears married, but there was no issue from this marriage. He was cremated. Malcolm Parks informs me that his branch and most of those in Nova Scotia spell the name with an "s". [Parks]. In the Port Medway branches it is spelled with an "e" [Parks]. Those in Ontario spelled in variously Parks and Parks, even within the same family. For the sake of continuity I have spelled all listings PARK as this was, I understand the original of the Scottish form of the surname.
Malcolm Gordon Parks was a Professor at the Dalhousie University 1956-1989. He retired in 1989 and resides this date [February 1996] in Petite Riviere. He lives in the house that his grand father Joseph Nelson Parks built in 1885. He tells me that this house stands no more than three hundred yards from the site of the first Matthew Park home. It is long gone now, but the house built by the Sperry family who bought the property from his son John Parks in 1824 is still standing.

Mary Elizabeth PARK was born on 1 April 1839 in Port Medway, Queens County, Nova Scotia. She died on 7 July 1922 at the age of 83 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Mary Elizabeth, known as Aunt Lizzie Kellogg, and from whom my mother Marguerite "Elizabeth" Hoffman takes her name, met and married Captain Charles Kellogg, probably in Nova Scotia and removed to Massachusetts. They had no issue. When my mother was a small child she and her mother visited Aunt Lizzie in Springfield where she was living in " an apartment house devoted to the care of the widows of sea captains." In the Massachusetts federal census for 1920, Mary E. Kellogg was living at 786 State St. as a lodger with James Stewart. The apartment building was known as the Winchester Square Chambers. She is listed as being 79 years old and born in Canada. [this would make her birth year as 1841!] Her obituary denies this however, stating:
" The funeral of Mrs. Mary E. Kellogg, widow of Charles Kellogg, died in her home, 786 State St. Friday night, will be held in the parlors of the Dickinson ..[unintelligible] eeter Company at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. She was born in Nova Scotia, April 1, 1839 and came to this country 30 years ago. [1890?] She had lived in this city eight years. She was a member of the Wesley Methodist Church and the W.C.T.U. She leaves two brothers, William Atwood Parks of this city and Charles Wesley Parks of New York City."Obituary printed in Springfield Union, July 9th, 1922. page #8. [ A Sunday paper?.Since from a perpetual calendar July 9th, 1922, falls on a Sunday. It states she died the previous Friday night so that would put the date of her death as the seventh of July, 1922..] In the Administration of her Estate form the Probate Court of Springfield, Mary E. left money to her two surviving brothers, [William] Atwood, and [Charles] Wesley; to the two children of deceased sister Lucinda viz: Ivah and Harold Sibley [neither of whom had issue] and to the five children of her deceased sister Jenny/ Jane C. Matthew PARK was born about 1725 in Northern Ireland. He died before 15 March 1814 at the age of 89 in Petite Riviere, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Granted lands at Petite Riviere November 7, 1771, [Crown Lands Index Sheet #40.] Petitioned with others of P.R. for use of La Have Islands as commons 1785. Died Petite Riviere prior to March 25, 1814, which is date of son Joseph's will. Children's order uncertain.
Malcolm Parks gives date of death as between 1812 and 1814.
"A General Return of the several Townships in the Province of Nova Scotia, the first day of January, 1767. indicates that very few, if any of the McNutt Irish settlers [whom I thought Matthew to be.] had stayed in the township of New Dublin. In 1766 there were only eleven Irish in the whole township; by 1770 there were thirty-one, of which twenty one were residents of Petite Riviere--the families of Patrick Porter, Matthew Park and James Park, and the bachelor or widower John Park--and fifteen of the thirty-one were members of the Park families. Therefore any inclination to assume that the Parks and Porters were survivors of McNutt's ill-fated settlement on 1762 is negated by a comparison of the 1766 and 1770 statistics, for in 1770 the Park families alone outnumbered the whole Irish population of the township in 1766. Des Brisay [History of Lunenburg County] was therefore no doubt correct when he stated that James Park "established himself in Petite Riviere in 1769." information that he would have received from James' grand-daughter, Ann Park of East La Have.

*For information on other Park notes please see under James Park Family.*

Note: Matthew and James cannot have been any closer that first cousins, as too many children of both families intermarried in the first and later generations.

Gravestone in the old cemetery in Mill Village reads "Nathan" and R.F.K adds "stone cutter's error?" Perhaps Matthew's second name was Nathan and he was called so to distinguish him from other Matthew Parks then living?
