A lifelong New Bedford resident, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Leah (Billington) Russell. She was a member of the South Baptist Church, where she was also a member of the Friendship Circle. Mrs. Whynot was formerly employed by St. Luke's Hospital as a registered nurse for 27 years until her retirement in 1975. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 166. During World War II, she served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Africa and Italy. She was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with two battle stars for the Rome-Arno and Appenine Campaigns. Survivors include two sons, Russell Whynot of Dartmouth and Charles Whynacht of Glastonbury, Conn.; a stepson, Ariel Whynot of Gardiner, Maine; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Charles Russell. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
