Tribute To Wilbur McCoombs
by Lanny DeLong
Wilbur McCoombs was a small man in stature but otherwise he was one of the biggest men I ever knew. I sat many times with him and ask questions of his past. What an exciting life he lived.
He was prisoner of war and escaped a couple of times. He was up before a firing squad and at the last minute was let go. He was able to survive the sinking of a torpedoed ship although he could not swim. On escaping from a prisoner of war camp he lived in the mountains of Italy in the winter with only sheep skins tied on his feet to keep them warm.
Oh how I loved to listen to his stories and Wilbur had the documentation to back them up.
When he told me of the time he was in a Lancaster Bomber as a tail gunner and collided with another Lancaster bomber and was able to survive the crash. I asked him about the first hours he spent after parachuting to the ground.
I asked ''how did you get caught?" and his answer was that he was hiding in a pumpkin patch and a dog smelled him out. I could always picture that scene. Little Wilbur in the pumpkin patch under the big pumpkin leaves.
Wilbur spent many hours at the Brooklyn Marina playing 45s and I am here to tell you if you were playing against him you had a very slim chance of winning he held the best cards time after time and would get that little grin on his face and give a little giggle each time he beat your play. We all thought the world of him at the Marina.
Wilbur never once had a bad word to say about anyone and if a conversation come along in that regard he would never get involved.
I visited Wilbur a few days before he left us and when I ask how he was doing he said "I am just waiting to die", he knew this was one time he was not going to escape and he accepted it. I like to think that "God" let Wilbur survive so many times so he could talk to people like myself and hope that we would learn from him. I will never be the man Wilbur was but I did learn many things from him and am very proud to be able to say I was a friend of Wilbur McCoombs.
Wilbur told me the last day I visited him that he wanted to make one more trip to the Marina and play a game of cards with us. He never made the trip but I can assure you he will be there many times in our conversations and thoughts.
Good bye, Wilbur. I will miss you as will all your Marina friends. Parents: Russell Wilbur MCCOOMBS and Annie Veronica MCGUIRE.
