Baker, G. Herbert - The death occurred at his home in Port Medway on Wednesday morning, Oct. 27, 1943 of George Herbert Baker, 66, due to a heart ailment. He was the son of the late Edward C. and Bertha (Cooney) Baker and was born in Port Medway. He was a ship carpenter by trade and for several years had been in the employ of Thompson Bros. Machinery Company (now Steel and Engine Products Limited) in Liverpool as foreman boat builder and before that had constructed wharves and breakwaters in various parts of the province. Mr. Baker had a very genial disposition and was highly respected by his many friends and fellow workmen. He was a Conservative and always took a deep interest in politics and in all matters of community welfare. He is survived by his wife, the former Ms. Avernia Rhodenizer, three sons Perleigh, Jordan, and Ira, all of Port Medway also three daughters, Gertrude, Mrs. Austin Burgess, Port Medway, Bertha and Irene, both at home. There are twelve grandchildren and a sister, Marina (Mrs. Arthur McConnell) of Halifax. He was predeceased by a son Lawrence in infancy, two sisters, Georgina, and Eliza; and a brother Arthur. The funeral was held Friday afternoon from the Port Medway Baptist Church. The service was conducted by the Rev. H. Barber with interment in the Greenwood Cemetery. Over 60 of his fellow workmen at Thompson Brothers were present at the service and marched to the cemetery. The many beautiful flowers expressed the sympathy of friends.

Mr. Baker came to Port Medway from Halifax over fifty years ago. He was for some time employed as stevedore and in the lumber industry. For several years he resided in Liverpool, returning here about ten years ago. He always took an interest in affairs for the good of the place and was of a kind and friendly disposition ready to lend a helping hand to any in need. He was a consistent member for years of the Anglican Church and acted as warden at one time. He was three times married. He is survived by his widow, formerly Miss. Bethia Mailman, and one son, G. Herbert Baker and two daughters, Marina, (Mrs. Arthur McConnell), and Georgina, (Mrs. Charles Zwicker). The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J. N. Bamford.
