He was an ardent collector of numismatic and philatelic articles, specializing in error/varieties. He was treasurer of International Variety Club, CNVCA, and a director of CIAC, both now defunct. During the Second World War he served with the 16th Ack - Ack Battery in coastal defence around Newfoundland. He retired from the Canadian Weather Service after 31 years, 10 of which were spent at the airport in Gander, Newfoundland. Also served with the Boy Scout movement, Catechetics, as well as the St. Vincent do Paul Society. Surviving are his wife, the former Eileen Hayes; sons, Robert, Greenwood; Kevin, Cole Harbour; daughter, Deborah (Mrs. Vernon Hiltz), Lower Sackville; sisters, Kathleen Whynacht, Mill Village; Ruth Cross, Prince Edward Island; Doris (Mrs. Donald MacKay), Brooklyn, Queens County; brothers Eugene, Etobicoke, Ontario; Donald, Fairview; Earl, Dartmouth; Dennis, Mill Village; Irvine, Port Medway; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Liverpool Advance May 23, 1917 : Another Queens County boy has given his life for King and Country. We refer to Pte. Samuel Maxwell McKinnon, son of Mr. and Mrs. David McKinnon, Mill Village, who was killed in action in France a few days ago. The young man was but 22 years of age, and his parents have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.

Liverpool Advance June 13, 1917 : Mill Village Hero Falls at Vimy Ridge : A large circle of friends sympathize deeply with Mr. and Mrs. David McKinnon, of Mill Village, in the sad news received by them of late of their son, Pte. Max McKinnon, who fell in the battle of Vimy Ridge. Private McKinnon enlisted at Swift Current, Saskatchewan, on the 2nd of March 1916, in teh 209th Western Battalion. He was a young man of good principles and well thought of among his fellow men. He was twenty-two years of age. He leaves to mourn their loss six brothers and five sisters. One brother is also serving at the front. A largely attended memorial service, conducted by Rev. Mr. Whitman, was held in the Baptist Church at Charleston on May 27th.
