She was the eldest of 12 children born to the late Parker and Mae (Hirtle) McKinnon. Kathleen was gifted with many artistic talents including crocheting, ceramics, painting watercolours and murals as well as a wonderful cook, which she thoroughly enjoyed sharing with her family and friends. She was an honorary member of the MVDFD Ladies Auxiliary and a former president of the Women's Institute. She was an avid bingo fan in Mill Village and Port Medway. She is survived by sons Byron (Betty), Port Medway and David (Helen) at home, grandsons, Blair, Stephen, Derek, David (Skana), and Christopher (Tanya), great-grandchildren Griffin, Alex and Ainsley, sisters, Doris, Ruth, brothers, Donald, Earl, Eugene, Dennis and Irvine. She was predeceased by husband Hughey, brothers, Max, Frank, sisters, Hilda and Gloria. To respect her long-term commitment her body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical Science. He was an ardent collector of numismatic and philatelic articles, specializing in error/varieties. He was treasurer of International Variety Club, CNVCA, and a director of CIAC, both now defunct. During the Second World War he served with the 16th Ack - Ack Battery in coastal defence around Newfoundland. He retired from the Canadian Weather Service after 31 years, 10 of which were spent at the airport in Gander, Newfoundland. Also served with the Boy Scout movement, Catechetics, as well as the St. Vincent do Paul Society. Surviving are his wife, the former Eileen Hayes; sons, Robert, Greenwood; Kevin, Cole Harbour; daughter, Deborah (Mrs. Vernon Hiltz), Lower Sackville; sisters, Kathleen Whynacht, Mill Village; Ruth Cross, Prince Edward Island; Doris (Mrs. Donald MacKay), Brooklyn, Queens County; brothers Eugene, Etobicoke, Ontario; Donald, Fairview; Earl, Dartmouth; Dennis, Mill Village; Irvine, Port Medway; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
