He died in 1884 at the age of 69 in Malahide, Elgin County, Ontario. Atwood was born in Port Medway about 1815/16. I have not been able to determine to whom he was sent after the drowning death of his father. Atwood would have been about ten at the time. It would seem probably, since he was later a tanner, currier and shoe maker, that he was perhaps let out to someone in this trade as an apprentice In 1838 he married Mary Ann Harlow. Their children were probably born at Port Medway. There is, however a map of the Parks that have resided at Park's Creek, or East La Have from 1781-1900 [Parks Family: K. Parks and P. Mombourquette. The introductory pages sent to me from Liverpool Museum.] On this map lot #8 is occupied [no date] by Robert and Atwood Parks. [since son Robert was also a shoe maker, could they have had an establishment there for the working of leather?] The first indication that I have of Atwood and Mary Ann being in "upper Canada" is the record of their son Wesley being baptized in Malachite Township in May of 1853 [from the Baptist. Records. of Wesleyan Methodist Church, Malachite, on micro film.] They give their place of residence as Malachite, however, they do not appear on the census records for the year 1851. It could be that they were staying with either Jerusha Park McConnell, James Park or even sister Lois Park Bangs, all of whom were living in Malachite at that time. They must have returned to Nova Scotia, as their last child, daughter Jerusha was born there in 1858. She died in 1862 and is buried in the Old Cemetery at Port Medway, Nova Scotia The next known of Atwood is when, in 1864, he purchased one acre of Land of the William Lyons Farm at the Grovesend Corners being Lot 22 Concession 1, Malachite Township Elgin County. and one acre at the S. E. Corner, part lot 23,Concession 1, Malachite. Six years later [1872] he sold both of these lots to Daniel Markle and moved to Lot 8, Concession 6, Malachite. It is interesting to note that there is a "Park Street" in Aylmer a block west of the High School, the location of which, before the town expanded would have been in Lot #8, concession #6 of Malachite. By the census of 1871, however, Atwood is living in the town of Aylmer[ location not indicated] with only Mary Ann, and Son Wesley. By the year 1872, Atwood and his son Robert are the proprietors of a business in the town of Aylmer, being tanners and curriers and preparers of leather [Businesses in town of Aylmer, 1772]. I cannot find them in the census of 1881. The death certificate of Atwood, does not give any parentage nor does it give place of birth. His cause of death is recorded [illegible] "from a note of Dr. Clarke" and is registered as occurring between June and December of 1884, by the County Clerk. [cause of death cystitis/?] It appears that Atwood and Mary Ann came to Upper Canada sometime around 1852-53 where Charles Wesley was born[ he was probably born in Nova Scotia and came with his parents this date.], and then returned at some unspecified date to Nova Scotia where Jerusha was born in 1858. They then returned to Upper Canada, purchasing the land noted above. Recently, from Harley Walker, found in the Diary of William Ford "....September 24, 1860..Atwood Parks and family returned from Canada...September 26, 1860..Mr. Atwood Parks moved into Dennis Hayden's place to-day, price $10 per quarter...October 19, 1860...rented to Alexander Ford the Hayden House at 10 pounds per year. Parks, who rented it before only stopped 6 days." With whom did Atwood and Mary Ann leave Elizabeth, Lucinda, and Jane when they came to Canada? There is no indication that these little girls were ever in Upper Canada with their parents.[ for that matter, Robert was in business with his father, and Wesley was born there, and James Deane operated photographic studios, first in Port Burwell, then Springfield and later in Aylmer and St, Thomas, [James was also a County Auctioneer, as per his outline in Elgin County Atlas of 1881.] there is no indication that any of the other children came with their parents, although they were quite young at the time, Charles" Atwood", who later lived in Springfield Mass, Elizabeth married and removed to Massachusetts, Lucinda likewise, and Jane was "sent to New York" [city or state was never clear.] to learn" the art of forming fruits and flower from wax." She was probably visiting her parents in Aylmer/Springfield when she met and soon after married James Clunas. There is no indication in the Elgin County census' of 1871 that any of the children other than "Wesley" lived with them in their residence in Aylmer. I have not found them in the 1851, 1861 census', but from the recent note form H. Walker, it would appear that they were in NOVA SCOTIA at the time of the 1861 census, and probably living with one of Atwood's siblings in the Port Burwell area during the census of 1851 which only gives Head of Family and number in household. There is nothing that I can find for 1881, although they appear to have been living in the town of Aylmer at this time. Armstrongs' Gazetteer for County of Elgin 1872: AYLMER: " A&R Parks..tanners and curriers". Methodist Marriages at Liverpool [Liverpool Museum, holder] May 21, 1838; Banns, Atwood Parks, Bachelor to Ann Harlow, Spinster by Rev. William. Smith. Both of Liverpool, married. at home of Robert Harlow. Records [incomplete] United Church manse, Petite Riviere [from Malcolm Parks] births and baptisms performed in the village by visiting ministers from Liverpool and Lunenburg 1806-1850, before there was a resident minister in Petite, R. Entry:" Atwood Deane Park, son of William and Elizabeth, aged 18 months, baptized by James Knowlan." The entry is under the year 1816. The entry of Atwood follows a baptism by a different minister, R. Taylor, and is itself followed by three more baptisms by Knowlan, all on Sunday September 8, 1816. Therefore almost certainly Knowlan, visiting from Liverpool would have baptized. all four infants, thus grouped to-gather at the same time, and that Atwood would have been born sometime in March of 1815. These baptisms would have been performed in the Methodist chapel in Petite Riviere for it had just been built in 1815. School Records for Petite Riviere 1821 lists James, William and Atwood Park as pupils. Parents: William PARK and Elizabeth COHOON. Spouse: Mary Ann HARLOW. Malcolm Parks of Petite Riviere tells me that he has a Baptism certificate for her for that date. He also informs me that perhaps Catherine was living with he mother at her Paternal grandparents in 1838, as the census for that year shows five members: James and Rebecca, a boy between six and fourteen, and two other females over fourteen. If Elizabeth was indeed living with her husband's parents at this time, the boy may well have been Solomon, who would have been about twelve at this time, and the girl would either have been Catherine or Lois. .[ Malcolm Parks, March 20, 1996] Parents: William PARK and Elizabeth COHOON. Charles Wesley , ["Wes"] PARK was born on 5 May 1853 in Port Medway, Queens County, Nova Scotia. He died after July 1922 at the age of 69 in Jersey City, New Jersey. For dates of birth and baptism see "Wesleyan Bapt. Records for Malahide Township. on Microfilm", Wesley [as he was bapt. but was called and wrote his name as Charles Wesley, or C.W.] was bapt. by Rev. G. Kennedy on May 21, 1854. Bapt. record gives his date of birth as May 5th, 1853, and his parents residence as Malahide Township. Since he was almost a year at this baptism, he could very well have been born in Nova Scotia and come to "Canada" with his parents, to one of Atwood's siblings during the previous year. Listing from the Jersey City Directory 1922-23 [R.L. Polk & Co.'s] " Parks, Chas. W.
